FileSync Tutorial and Notes

FileSync allows you to SYNC up an FTP directory with your iPhone. Since it uses FTP, this means you can literally SYNC your files anytime, anywhere, whether on your internal wireless network or roaming the world on the 3G.

This tutorial assumes you understand the basic concepts of FTP, (if not, click here).

Ok, so you've installed the app. The first thing you'll want to do is edit your Settings. To do this, simply tap on the "Settings" button:

Next, tap on the "+" button:

Enter your profile name (for this example we will be using the "Jeff-Net Test Server" settings):

Next, simply enter in your FTP server information. For Host, you can enter either a domain name (somesyncname.com) or an IP address (99.99.99.999). Note, I find IP addresses to be faster. Then, enter your Username and Password. Last, enter your Folder. This Folder can be a relative directory path (no beginning forward slash), a full directory path (beginning with a forward slash), or no directory at all (you can leave it blank). Leaving it blank will cause FileSync to attemp to start downloading from the directory that is available immediately upon logging in. If you want to use the Virtual Mail Attachment feature, you can enter in those optional settings. Once you are finished entering your settings, tap "Settings" to go back (and it's automatically saved).

From here, you will want to tap on the blank checkbox to the left of the server profile name (this will place a red checkmark into the box). This means you have chosen this server profile as one of your unlimited profiles to sync. If it is not checked, it will not sync.

Note, if you don't select at least one server profile, you will get this warning message if you tap "SYNC".

The next step, assuming you want to go ahead and load your files, is to tap the "SYNC" button. This will cause FileSync to begin connecting to your FTP server and downloading all of your files. FileSync will download all file and folders in the directory that you entered. It will display a status as it downloads.

Once the download is complete, tap on "DONE". Tap on the server profile that you want to view. Simply tap on the file you want to view and it will load.

NOTE: You may tilt your iPhone sideways to landscape mode and the FileSync app will adjust to that setting.

That's it. If you have any problems downloading, re-check your settings. The most common error/problems we get from users is 1) they don't actually know how to use FTP. Make sure you understand what FTP is and how it works. 2) Verify the domain/IP address for the host and the ID and password you're using.

Here are a couple of error and warning screens you may see in FileSync and how to respond to them.

Invalid Server Profile is caused by what was just described... either the domain or IP address is incorrect or unreachable. In some cases, your company firewall my block access to the server. This message simple means "we can't get to what you're telling us to connect to".

Yellow Check on Server Profile is caused by either a modified server profile that has not been sync'd yet or by a sync that does not complete successfully. If you sync multiple servers, if there's a problem, you will get a quick note and it will continue sync'ing the other server profiles. The yellow check simply means "this profile has not been 100% sync'd yet".
